I'm here, lying in bed with a terrible tension headache but I'll put my thoughts on the EO when it comes to travel/vanlife.
Once upon a time, many seniors, mostly retired, would either sell their home or keep their home as a base for returning to. Traveling our picturesque land of the USA has been a favorite past time for many, a dream, perhaps? Ever since I was a young girl, I've had the soul of a free-spirited, wanderlust gypsy who wanted to travel the country & photograph the journey to someday show my children/grandkids. I remember collecting the many travel books/magazines from the gas stations in SW FL. that had specials for hotels & restaurants along the many miles of road markers throughout the US as many traveled. I have 2 copies of Motel 6's hotel books that I still read to this day; a piece of travel nostalgia. In 2001, my then hubby and I had plans for our golden years to retire, leave our apt and seek out dreams of the open road in a class B RV; the Roadtrek. It has been my favorite for decades. Now, it's 2025 and I'm entering my golden years. I may be divorced but I can still presue my dream, or has it been diminished? The current administration has signed an EO about criminalizing homelessness/those without a permanent address. I understand & agree that the city streets need to be clean and free of the garage, drugs & the smells that homeless encampments hold. I believe, in the early 80s, the Republican party closed all institutions that could help/house those with drug &/or mental health struggles. With that said, where do those who created this situation by closing institutions expect them to go? Then you have the high cost of living especially the housing market. If the greed of landlords & property owners could see they're part of the situation where so many tenants are being priced out of their home or apartment, thus becoming homeless themselves. Addressing the rental market along with reopening institutions to help those who are struggling would, in my opinion, alleviate the many who are homeless. Traveling in an RV, car, van SUV or other means has been around for decades and always been enjoyable without fears of being possibly criminalized for doing so. In fairness, it takes a few bad traveling van dwellers to ruin things for those who abide by laws. Those who liter, don't mind the rules for boondocking & such. And, the city streets filled with trash & stentches everywhere can make it more difficult for those traveling the country by vehicle, who DO abide the laws. I've been reading the many forums about the EO in the USA pertaining to the homeless situation and there's many opinions on this topic. I also think there's too much misinformation. I would still love to fulfill my dream of traveling via the van life style but don't want to fear being criminalized for it. Those are my thoughts on van life, traveling, the homeless and, the EO. |
